A quintessential wildflower, California Poppy adds the feel of broad sweeping meadows to even the smallest of plantings. Its long stems hold vibrant orange cups that add a casual beauty when naturalized on slopes or hillsides. Useful color along a simulated dry stream bed. Very nice in a rock garden near drought-tolerant shrubs like Rockrose (Cistus). Because it tolerates some filtered shade, it is a useful plant for under oak trees. Create a woodland garden with other shade-tolerant wildflowers, such as Mountain Phlox (Linanthus grandiflorus) and California Blue Bell (Phacelia campanularia).
